Artist’s statement:

“‘Mar Pacifico’” is the name of the mosaic art I am submitting, and is also the name the Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan, gave to the beautiful body of water we know as the Pacific Ocean. It means "peaceful sea." In creating this work of art, I thought about how the beauty of peacefulness and calm contentment is often what we strive for, and have hope for, in our lives.

“Pollution, ecological destruction and disease
can harm the Earth's beautiful waters,
which gives life to all of its inhabitants.”

Life, like the ocean, is not always peaceful. Pollution, ecological destruction and disease can harm the Earth's beautiful waters, which gives life to all of its inhabitants. Awareness and education can bring positive change.

Artists can contribute to this positive change by recycling, reusing, and restoring. My mosaic is comprised of a used glass substrate that I purchased from
St. John's Thrift Shoppe. All of the proceeds of items purchased through the shop benefit a variety of charitable organizations. The tempered glass used in my mosaic art is from a thick shower door that would have become part of a landfill. Positive change can transform discarded items into beautiful, peaceful art. Creating this art and submitting it to ARTvision Atlanta is a wonderful opportunity for me to promote my art and promote positive change by having it seen.

Cathy Aten, an artist, spoke the following words of wisdom:

‘Though creation of art is an interior process, it is not strictly a solitary one, and the vision only becomes complete when it is seen. Viewers become part of the artistic process when they contribute their unique consciousness to the experience-and, as a result, complete the circle of wholeness.’”
