Paula Ettelbrick, Early ARTvision Supporter, Dies At 56
(17 October 2011 - Atlanta) :: Paula Ettelbrick, a national LGBT human-rights advocate and early ARTvision Atlanta supporter, died Friday in New York of complications from cancer. She was 56.As a friend and colleague of my aunt Betsy Weedon - in whose memory ARTvision was founded - Paula was an unshakable force in critical advocacy roles, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Empire State Pride Agenda and, most recently, the Stonewall Community Foundation.
From The Advocate:Cary Alan Johnson, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, which Ettelbrick led before joining the Stonewall Community Foundation last year, paid one of many tributes to her.
“Paula was so many things to so many people — her family, the movement, the New York City and global queer communities,” he wrote in an email. “First and foremost I can say that I found her to be so genuinely deeply unfalteringly committed to our liberation as LGBT people.”
Johnson is correct. Ettelbrick responded enthusiastically when I approached her for ARTvision’s inaugural year, and with a handful of enthusiastic, generous artists, we raised more than $1,400. Thanks to her that initial support, we’ve since raised nearly $26,000 for three different charities - most recently, Atlanta’s own Positive Impact.
