Last Post Before Our Event: By Will Pollock

We are gearing up for an exciting event tomorrow! I hope you’ll join us. Remember to RSVP if you haven’t already.

Important to note:
we have nearly $18,000 worth of art to sell tomorrow night, so let’s get to it!

I’ll be offering four pieces for our event. They are:

  • Madaket Sun. Growing up on Nantucket gave me unusual access to one of the most beautiful places on earth. This image was shot along an inlet near Madaket Beach, right at sunset. Custom framing by JD Isaacs at Rose Squared Gallery & Framing.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

  • Hendrix Bloom. An accidental homage to the late, great Jimi Hendrix, this image was taken at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens during a recent visit with my parents. The Hendrix song, “Purple Haze” was apparently inspired by a dream Hendrix had where he was walking under the sea, and was engulfed by a purple haze and got lost. I got lost in this bloom when I took it, and hopefully you will, too.

  • Nomad. I got a call from my neighbor Jim Stapleton that a hawk had landed in the backyard and that I should grab my camera and shoot it. So, I did. The guy didn’t stay long and looked as though he had lots of other places to visit. This was the shot I got off in time before he scooted away.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

  • Wake Up/Brilliance. Named for the Melissa Etheridge song, “I Need to Wake Up,” this simple sunrise image was shot in Chautauqua, N.Y., and reminded me of the importance of seeing each day as new, fresh and brilliant. “I am not an island/I am not alone/I am my intentions/trapped here in this flesh and bone” is the lyric that has stuck with me all this time, and this scene reminded me of that. This song was the single motivator for starting ARTvision back in 2006.

See you tomorrow!

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug
  • Todd Wiggins’ blog has some terrific travel photographs that are a must-see. Check them out here at SecretTrustFund.com. His “Presence” is now being offered at $400.
Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug
  • Gordon Stuedler’s “Palm Lagoon” is finished, as is Vibecke Dahle’s “Memories” - both of which are coming tomorrow for the site, and available on Thursday night.

More soon. If you like these or any others,
make sure to reserve them ahead of our event at The Phillip Rush Center.

Two days to go until our first standalone event.

ARTvision: From Online to In-Person

When ARTvision began back in 2006, it was designed to be an online celebration of the arts - using strategic photos, measurements and “romance” to coax buyers into making corresponding donations to buy art.

Slowly but surely, we added in-person viewing to the ARTvision equation, and you responded. Our preview viewing events in both 2009 and 2010 yielded thousands of donations before the official day of the event on New Year’s Eve.

This year, we are trying something entirely new, also based on fan feedback. We’ve moved ARTvision to a standalone event - just to focus on the in-person viewing and fund-raising that will take away the crunch of the end of the year and allow folks to get that tax deduction before the end of the year.

Keep those comments and feedback coming. Without it, we won’t be able to improve!

Please join us this Thursday, 1 December 2011, at The Phillip Rush Center for ARTvision Atlanta’s first standalone event. As always, 100% of proceeds benefit Positive Impact. (RSVP on Facebook or Evite). Admission is free for all.

"Splish Splash" In Brenda McMillen's Heart of Love Series

Only a handful of artists have been with ARTvision every year since inception, and Brenda McMillen is one of them. What’s more, she’s sold at least one piece in each of those years. So let’s keep Brenda’s streak alive with “Splish Splash,” the latest in her “Heart of Love” series. (read more)

ARTvision in the News: Fenuxe, GA Voice

Two local-Atlanta publications have given ARTvision some ink. They are:
  • ARTvision Values,” Fenuxe magazine (17 November 2011). Money quote: “Most recently we have used art therapy specifically for HIV and addiction recovery in our substance abuse treatment program. Creating art can be a very powerful form of therapy,” Michael Baker told the magazine.
  • World AIDS Day Strives to Raise Awareness,” GA Voice (24 November 2011). Money quote: “The fundraiser, previously held primarily online, moved to Dec. 1 for its first year as a standalone event. It features fine art for sale, entertainment, cocktails and food with 100 percent of proceeds going to Positive Impact.”
Watch out for more coverage leading up to our event on Thursday!

"Lulu's Bubbles" by Julia Murney Now Listed on eBay!

Great news - “Lulu’s Bubbles” is now actively listed on eBay. Starting bid is $750, but fret not, a second piece by Julia entitled “Kauai Chicken” will also be offered at our first-ever standalone event on 1 Dec. 2011 at The Phillip Rush Center. Read below for details.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

The frame for “Lulu,” from a local distributor here in Atlanta, is stunning: it’s an oil-rubbed, silver-leaf, chunky frame with lots of character, but one that doesn’t detract from the image itself. (

Great thanks again to Julia for lending her creative talents to ARTvision and Positive Impact.

Paula Ettelbrick, Early ARTvision Supporter, Dies At 56

(17 October 2011 - Atlanta) :: Paula Ettelbrick, a national LGBT human-rights advocate and early ARTvision Atlanta supporter, died Friday in New York of complications from cancer. She was 56.

As a friend and colleague of my aunt Betsy Weedon -
in whose memory ARTvision was founded - Paula was an unshakable force in critical advocacy roles, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Empire State Pride Agenda and, most recently, the Stonewall Community Foundation.

From
The Advocate:
Cary Alan Johnson, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, which Ettelbrick led before joining the Stonewall Community Foundation last year, paid one of many tributes to her.

“Paula was so many things to so many people — her family, the movement, the New York City and global queer communities,” he wrote in an email. “First and foremost I can say that I found her to be so genuinely deeply unfalteringly committed to our liberation as LGBT people.”
Johnson is correct. Ettelbrick responded enthusiastically when I approached her for ARTvision’s inaugural year, and with
a handful of enthusiastic, generous artists, we raised more than $1,400. Thanks to her that initial support, we’ve since raised nearly $26,000 for three different charities - most recently, Atlanta’s own Positive Impact.

Paula will be greatly missed, and our hearts go out to her entire family. Links to other news stories posted below.

Artist Sneak Peek: Gordon Stuedler

(16 October 2011 - Atlanta) :: Photographer Gordon Stuedler comes to ARTvision via Twitter. After I noticed one of his snazzy shots, I clicked over to his gallery and, needless to say, was struck by his vision and sense of composition.

“Palm Lagoon” is one of the best statements of ARTvision-6’s theme, “restoreARTive,” because it embodies an uncomplicated, calm, infinite serenity usually reserved for our imaginations.

“Palm Lagoon” by Gordon Stuedler

“Believe it or not, 'Palm Lagoon' is not a lagoon,” he says. “It is part of a palm grove the morning after a very heavy rainfall. The water in between the palms was probably about 6" deep.”

Stay tuned to this site for more on this piece - including frame details and pricing - as well as more preview pieces very soon.
