SOLD! "Nomad" by Will Pollock

Thanks to Julie Boyer for the donation and purchase of “Nomad” by Will Pollock. This hawk came to visit the Stapletons on Myrtle Street and Will ran out in his skivvies to take the picture. This is one of three pictures he was able to snap before the hawk flew away.

Last Post Before Our Event: By Will Pollock

We are gearing up for an exciting event tomorrow! I hope you’ll join us. Remember to RSVP if you haven’t already.

Important to note:
we have nearly $18,000 worth of art to sell tomorrow night, so let’s get to it!

I’ll be offering four pieces for our event. They are:

  • Madaket Sun. Growing up on Nantucket gave me unusual access to one of the most beautiful places on earth. This image was shot along an inlet near Madaket Beach, right at sunset. Custom framing by JD Isaacs at Rose Squared Gallery & Framing.

  • Hendrix Bloom. An accidental homage to the late, great Jimi Hendrix, this image was taken at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens during a recent visit with my parents. The Hendrix song, “Purple Haze” was apparently inspired by a dream Hendrix had where he was walking under the sea, and was engulfed by a purple haze and got lost. I got lost in this bloom when I took it, and hopefully you will, too.

  • Nomad. I got a call from my neighbor Jim Stapleton that a hawk had landed in the backyard and that I should grab my camera and shoot it. So, I did. The guy didn’t stay long and looked as though he had lots of other places to visit. This was the shot I got off in time before he scooted away.

  • Wake Up/Brilliance. Named for the Melissa Etheridge song, “I Need to Wake Up,” this simple sunrise image was shot in Chautauqua, N.Y., and reminded me of the importance of seeing each day as new, fresh and brilliant. “I am not an island/I am not alone/I am my intentions/trapped here in this flesh and bone” is the lyric that has stuck with me all this time, and this scene reminded me of that. This song was the single motivator for starting ARTvision back in 2006.

See you tomorrow!

Finished & Ready: Gordon Stuedler's "Palm Lagoon"

Gordon Stuedler joins ARTvision through a connection on Twitter. His landscape photography is unmistakable. With “Palm Lagoon,” he gives us an illusory look at a South Florida waterway.

“I shot this one morning within two or three hundred yards of the Homestead Air Force Base,” he says. “The rows of palms were all flooded as I drove around looking for likely shots, this one had the look of an actual waterway densely bordered by palms and underbrush. (read more)

This piece is output to archival paper and is set in a sustainable bamboo frame from PictureFrames.com - offered at $
250.

Please join us tomorrow, 1 December 2011, at The Phillip Rush Center for ARTvision Atlanta’s first standalone event. As always, 100% of proceeds benefit Positive Impact. (RSVP on Facebook or Evite). Admission is free for all.

Three Stunning Images From Folsom by Dean Ignacio

Thanks to a chance connection by my friend and trainer Eric Do, we are all treated to the talent of San Francisco college student and avid photographer Dean Ignacio for the first time. His “Folsom” series, mostly black and white but some in color, reveal a humanness of revelers rarely seen in a young photographer. (read more)

Dean says the homeless man in “Adventures in Scavenging” used his shopping cart like a adventure chariot. "He was laid out on the street like rag doll and very complacent of himself, as if the shopping cart was dragging him to places unknown,” he says. “Folsom as 'unknown' is such an understatement and I'm sure he had a lot to scavenge that day."

The “Folsom” series is offered as a collection or individually. $450 for each and $1,200 for the trio. For more details,
go directly to Dean’s artist page.

The Stunning, Mixed-media Photography of AlexisCoram

(22 November 2011 :: ATLANTA/CHICAGO) You’re in for some great photography selections for this year’s ARTvision - and some of our best and most creative ever from Chicago’s own AlexisCoram. I met Alexis when I attended the wedding of Jim Verraros & Bill Brennan (which, by the way, yielded the ARTvision image “Moments that Matter,” a piece that sold twice in a matter of minutes in 2009), and we hit it off immediately.

Upon an astute reminder-suggestion by
Penny Frulla, one of our awesome artist outreach gals, we successfully talked Alexis into joining the ARTvision fold with “Waterboy” and “Ascent,” two stunning photography pieces output to metal that will knock your socks off. (read more)

“Waterboy” is a celebratory shot of a water fountain in the evening, with warm tones and illumination. “Ascent” is an sparse, abstract scene of a dry flower. Both are mounted on metal; we’re offering each at $
300 or $550 for the pair. - WP

Featured: "Great Mystery" by Jason Maynard

Photographs that are both dark and spirit-stirring often offer an unfamiliar sensory road, where many viewer assumptions are challenged simultaneously. Such is the case with “Great Mystery” by Jason Maynard, who returns to ARTvision this year, following up his stunning pictures from 2010: “Witness” and “Diamonds.” “Mystery” is shot inside a church in Paris, looking up at the ceiling. Featured: Todd Wiggins' Nature Photography Yields "Presence"

As a first-time exhibitor, traveler extraordinaire Todd Wiggins brings a unique, thoughtful eye to each scene he encounters. “The original reason for taking this picture was that I thought it was beautiful, so I found a unique angle looking directly down from above the cactus,” he says. “This framed the delicate bloom amid the harsh spines protruding in every direction from the stems below.

“Unknowingly at the time and as sometimes luckily happens, this photograph also captured the feeling of the moment and the essence of the object.

“I feel the ‘presence’ of nature in this photograph - the peace of the dessert, the grandeur of its home in the Grand Canyon,” he adds. “Nature continually astounds me in its ability to be completely present and self-assured despite its fragility.” For more, go directly to
Todd’s ARTvision artist page.

Presence” is offered for a donation to Positive Impact for $400.

Delia Cochran Returns with Two Subtle, Emotive Images

As the creator behind “In the Moment,” one of 2010’s signature pieces, Delia Cochran returns to ARTvision with two great images: “Between Chords” and “Reaching through Tears.” The former, she says, offered her a chance to capture a reflective moment for a street musician in Tokyo. (read more)

“It was as though he had everything else on pause as he went inward for the inspiration for what would be next,” she says. The time “between chords” provide the next inspired strum that would reflect all that was being created in this place of refection and renewal.”

First-ever 'Quad Collaboration' with "Tis of Thee..."

(15 November 2011 :: Atlanta & Chicago) This is one of the coolest stories of this year’s ARTvision.

The tale begins with
AlexisCoram and her website, PhotographProse.com. I’ve been a contributor to this site for some time, most recently with “No Regrets from the Greener Sanctuary,” a poem I wrote set to Zed Boucher-Myers’ photo to commemorate Thom Anderson’s new counseling space.

The point of PhotographProse is to join writers and photographers in an online environment, to collaborate and tell stories and exchange creative ideas. Very much in line with the ARTvision philosophy.

Fast forward to this past September 11, when I loaded a photo entitled “
Pride” to my blog, shot on the streets of Provincetown, Mass., to accompany a blog post about the 10th anniversary of that horrific day. Unbeknownst to me, longtime ARTvision artist Brenda Knosher jumped on the site and wrote “’Tis of Thee” as a prose reflection of the image and day.

“’Tis of Thee” frame before distressing

“’Tis of Thee” frame after distressing

From that point, I got it in my nutty head to ask my mother,
Mary Pollock, to use her expert calligraphy in “typesetting” the poem on a piece of archival art/drawing paper. I found the perfect frame, too, at Binders and have since distressed the interior to match the color of the door.

The quad-collaboration was hence born, and so we’re offering “’
Tis of Thee,” to Positive Impact donors for $400. Thanks to Alexis, Brenda, my mother for contributing to this cool storyline. - WP

Via Barb Shadomy, Picture of Two Contemporary Art Giants

Described by the artist as “eight wigs, two days of posing, 16 contact sheets and 349 shots,” Christopher Makos captured a brief but revealing portrait of his friend and fellow artist, Andy Warhol. This year, we are very lucky to be offering an original from this historic photo shoot - which offers a brief glimpse into the late artist’s life and mercurial personality.

Here’s a video snippet from the show at
Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York:

The
description from the J. Paul Getty Museum website captures the spirit of the session well:

Warhol and Makos made a number of pictures, both black-and-white prints and color Polaroids, of their first attempt. For the second round of pictures, they hired a theater makeup person. This stage professional better understood the challenge of transforming a man's face into that of a woman. After the makeup, Warhol tried on curled, straight, long, short, dark, and blonde wigs. Here he appears in a conventionally masculine white shirt and plaid tie.

Ongoing thanks and gratitude go out to Barb Shadomy and her partner Karen Meyer - owner of Stonehurst Place, an ARTvision sponsor - for donating the piece and signed book to our event this year. For more on pricing and other details, go to the Christopher Makos artist page.

The framed, matted print comes with a certificate of authenticity and verso stamping. The book is a signed, original copy of “Lady Warhol” by Christopher Makos. (

Introducing Photographer Dean Ignacio

San Francisco photographer Dean Ignacio joins ARTvision with three stunning images from Folsom Street Fair. Dean was introduced to us through Eric Do, a fan and good friend.

“Adventures in Scavenging” by Dean Ignacio

“Where’s the Shower Dial?” by Dean Ignacio

“There’s No Place Like Folsom” by Dean Ignacio

All three of these pieces are being framed by ARTvision sponsor Rose Squared Gallery & Framing in Decatur. They will be offered as a collection or individually. More on pricing, sizes and specs coming soon.

Two years ago, Dean created a series of photos taken around San Francisco as a response to the lack of originality the city had been depicted over the decades. Because of its richness of local color, Dean's album became a hit and was warmly (and critically) praised by his friends and peers.

Currently, he is a History of Art major at the University of California, Berkeley with the hopes of becoming a photojournalist or a travel correspondent.

Artist Sneak Peek: Vicky Croisant

(20 October 2011 - Atlanta) :: Photographer and zoo keeper Vicky Croisant comes to ARTvision as a buyer of one of Julia Murney’s 2010 offerings, “Blooming Coconut.” Her generosity was critical in earning us close to $12,000 in earnings last year; she expressed interest in donating some animal photography for this year’s event. As you’ll see, it’s a good thing we said “yes.”

“Standing Strong” by Vicky Croisant

“Cruisin’ the Pool” by Vicky Croisant

As the Wild Animal Keeper at the
Akron Zoo in Ohio, Vicky has unique access to some of the most beautiful and expressive animals on the planet. With “restoreARTive” as our 2011 theme, Vicky chose “Tamarr” (top) and “Aletta” as animal-kingdom examples of how animals can soothe the soul.

Artist Sneak Peek: Gordon Stuedler

(16 October 2011 - Atlanta) :: Photographer Gordon Stuedler comes to ARTvision via Twitter. After I noticed one of his snazzy shots, I clicked over to his gallery and, needless to say, was struck by his vision and sense of composition.

“Palm Lagoon” is one of the best statements of ARTvision-6’s theme, “restoreARTive,” because it embodies an uncomplicated, calm, infinite serenity usually reserved for our imaginations.

“Palm Lagoon” by Gordon Stuedler

“Believe it or not, 'Palm Lagoon' is not a lagoon,” he says. “It is part of a palm grove the morning after a very heavy rainfall. The water in between the palms was probably about 6" deep.”

Stay tuned to this site for more on this piece - including frame details and pricing - as well as more preview pieces very soon.
