(13 February 2012 :: ATLANTA) - After a great fund-raising season - and after taking a breather from the frenetic pace that the New Year brought - we have a lot of great news to report. In no particular order, here is a full accounting of sales from our greatly successful sixth year:

We are gearing up for our last sales push over New Year’s Eve and The Tenth Annual Gourmet Pizza Extravaganza. Here are some details:

- “Nomad” by Will Pollock has now sold three copies, and he will be offering this piece as an exclusive 2011 series. Anyone else who wishes to purchase this piece can make a one-time $200 donation to Positive Impact and get in on the special order. Great thanks to all who purchased!
- Todd Wiggins has graciously discounted “Presence” again - it’s now down to $250. Take advantage on this great price for the gorgeous mixed-media photography piece.
- Super-photographer Dean Ignacio still has two of three in his “Folsom” series remaining. We will show them on New Year’s Eve so make sure to either let Will know you’re interested or come on New Year’s and see it in person!

I’ll be offering four pieces for our event. They are:
- Madaket Sun. Growing up on Nantucket gave me unusual access to one of the most beautiful places on earth. This image was shot along an inlet near Madaket Beach, right at sunset. Custom framing by JD Isaacs at Rose Squared Gallery & Framing.
- Hendrix Bloom. An accidental homage to the late, great Jimi Hendrix, this image was taken at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens during a recent visit with my parents. The Hendrix song, “Purple Haze” was apparently inspired by a dream Hendrix had where he was walking under the sea, and was engulfed by a purple haze and got lost. I got lost in this bloom when I took it, and hopefully you will, too.
- Nomad. I got a call from my neighbor Jim Stapleton that a hawk had landed in the backyard and that I should grab my camera and shoot it. So, I did. The guy didn’t stay long and looked as though he had lots of other places to visit. This was the shot I got off in time before he scooted away.
- Wake Up/Brilliance. Named for the Melissa Etheridge song, “I Need to Wake Up,” this simple sunrise image was shot in Chautauqua, N.Y., and reminded me of the importance of seeing each day as new, fresh and brilliant. “I am not an island/I am not alone/I am my intentions/trapped here in this flesh and bone” is the lyric that has stuck with me all this time, and this scene reminded me of that. This song was the single motivator for starting ARTvision back in 2006.

Bird in Hand: "A Christmas Snowbird" by Mary Pollock

(30 November 2011 :: Atlanta & Charlottesville) Following big success with “Ladies of a Certain Age” and “Nantucket Morning,” Mary Pollock returns to ARTvision with “A Christmas Snowbird,” which is a drawing that my parents sent as a Christmas Card about 30 years ago. (read more)
Framed beautifully by Walt Woodall at Metro Gallery & Framing, the back of the piece features the greeting page of the card that’s been cut out and mounted. “A Christmas Snowbird” is offered to Positive Impact donors for $850.
Mary is sister of the late Betsy Weedon, in whose honor ARTvision was founded. She lives in Charlottesville with her husband, my brother and his family. - WP

Two local-Atlanta publications have given ARTvision some ink. They are:
- “ARTvision Values,” Fenuxe magazine (17 November 2011). Money quote: “Most recently we have used art therapy specifically for HIV and addiction recovery in our substance abuse treatment program. Creating art can be a very powerful form of therapy,” Michael Baker told the magazine.
- “World AIDS Day Strives to Raise Awareness,” GA Voice (24 November 2011). Money quote: “The fundraiser, previously held primarily online, moved to Dec. 1 for its first year as a standalone event. It features fine art for sale, entertainment, cocktails and food with 100 percent of proceeds going to Positive Impact.”

As a first-time exhibitor, traveler extraordinaire Todd Wiggins brings a unique, thoughtful eye to each scene he encounters. “The original reason for taking this picture was that I thought it was beautiful, so I found a unique angle looking directly down from above the cactus,” he says. “This framed the delicate bloom amid the harsh spines protruding in every direction from the stems below.
“Unknowingly at the time and as sometimes luckily happens, this photograph also captured the feeling of the moment and the essence of the object.

Two years ago, Dean created a series of photos taken around San Francisco as a response to the lack of originality the city had been depicted over the decades. Because of its richness of local color, Dean's album became a hit and was warmly (and critically) praised by his friends and peers.
Currently, he is a History of Art major at the University of California, Berkeley with the hopes of becoming a photojournalist or a travel correspondent.

Paula Ettelbrick, Early ARTvision Supporter, Dies At 56
(17 October 2011 - Atlanta) :: Paula Ettelbrick, a national LGBT human-rights advocate and early ARTvision Atlanta supporter, died Friday in New York of complications from cancer. She was 56.As a friend and colleague of my aunt Betsy Weedon - in whose memory ARTvision was founded - Paula was an unshakable force in critical advocacy roles, including the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the Empire State Pride Agenda and, most recently, the Stonewall Community Foundation.
From The Advocate:Cary Alan Johnson, executive director of the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission, which Ettelbrick led before joining the Stonewall Community Foundation last year, paid one of many tributes to her.
“Paula was so many things to so many people — her family, the movement, the New York City and global queer communities,” he wrote in an email. “First and foremost I can say that I found her to be so genuinely deeply unfalteringly committed to our liberation as LGBT people.”
Johnson is correct. Ettelbrick responded enthusiastically when I approached her for ARTvision’s inaugural year, and with a handful of enthusiastic, generous artists, we raised more than $1,400. Thanks to her that initial support, we’ve since raised nearly $26,000 for three different charities - most recently, Atlanta’s own Positive Impact.
Paula will be greatly missed, and our hearts go out to her entire family. Links to other news stories posted below. - WP

“restorearttive: creative therapy”
This 2011 theme celebrates art’s wide-reaching therapeutic properties, drawn from all artistic platforms. All artists will be tasked with donating and creating works that support the idea that art can heal, instruct and expand one’s thinking and feeling. Works will include photography, painting, mixed-media, jewelry, pottery, metal sculpture and much more.
What’s new this year? Here are some of the first details:
- New date/location. Our event, usually held at the home of Will Pollock on New Year’s Eve, will now be held on 1 December 2011, at The Phillip Rush Center on Dekalb Ave. Details about time to follow, but please mark your calendar for that date, which commemorates World AIDS Day.
- Expanded collector donations. We are happy to announce a call to collectors who would like to donate a photography, painting or other piece of art for the purpose of raising funds for PI. For more on this great opportunity, please contact Will Pollock or Michael Baker.
- Program advertising and artist exposure. In conjunction with this event, Will Pollock and Stone Four Media will produce a program with artist bios, donated piece information and advertisements from local businesses. Please stay tuned for more on this great opportunity.
- Suggestion box. If you have an idea or would like to suggest an artist for this event, please contact us for more.

All parties - Julia, the original auction winner, and Vicky - have agreed to do a second piece to make it a two-piece collection for 2010. Congratulations and thanks to all! In all, “Blooming Coconut” has brought Positive Impact a total of $4,150!
- “Maritime Calm” by Will Pollock has sold off-roster (meaning it wasn’t originally listed for sale). We are working on a size, price and pictures. More on that soon! Price TBD.
- “Witness” by Jason Maynard has sold to Scott Layne and Matt Litchfield in Waynesboro, Va. Price: $125
